PANAJI: Eleven fishermen were rescued after their fishing canoe overturned in rough sea conditions off Majorda beach on Sunday morning, thanks to a prompt rescue operation carried out by Drishti Marine lifesavers.
According to Drishti Marine, the canoe had set out from Velsao earlier in the day and was returning to shore with its catch when its engine reportedly failed. As the vessel drifted in turbulent waters, a powerful wave capsized the canoe, throwing all 11 fishermen into the sea.
Lifesavers from Drishti Marine responded immediately, deploying jet skis from nearby beaches, including Colva, Betalbatim and Arossim. All 11 fishermen, who were wearing life jackets, were safely brought back to shore.
A 50-year-old fisherman from Odisha suffered breathing difficulties following the incident. He was given oxygen at the site before being shifted to hospital in a 108 ambulance. His condition is reported to be stable. The other fishermen escaped unharmed.
Drishti Marine reiterated that Goa’s coastline remains hazardous during the monsoon due to strong winds and rough seas. Swimming is prohibited at all state beaches during this period for public safety.
The agency said it has deployed over 480 trained lifesavers and beach marshals across Goa’s major beaches, waterfalls and four inland water bodies to ensure quick emergency response and visitor safety.
