23-Year-Old Housekeeping Staffer Drowns in Talpona River During Kayak Ride

CANACONA: A 23-year-old housekeeping staffer drowned in the Talpona River at Muthal, Sadolxem, Canacona, after a kayak overturned during a recreational ride on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Rakesh Singh Roy, a resident of Muthal, Sadolxem, and originally from West Bengal.

According to police, Roy had entered the river around 3.30 pm along with two other housekeeping staffers, Bisharlang Shylla (24) from Meghalaya and Rupesh Kumar Sahu (21) from Jharkhand.

During the return journey, as the kayak approached the riverbank, Roy reportedly jumped into the water, causing the kayak to overturn. The other two occupants managed to get out safely, but Roy failed to resurface.

Canacona Fire Station personnel were alerted and launched a rescue operation. Roy’s body was recovered from the river at around 6.30 pm.

Police conducted the scene inspection and inquest panchanama, while the body was shifted to South Goa District Hospital, Margao, for medico-legal formalities.

Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Babu Dessai of Canacona Police Station.
