VASCO: A 62-year-old man lost his life after a large roadside tree suddenly collapsed onto his scooter on the busy Matve–Dabolim–Vasco road on Wednesday, causing chaos and bringing traffic to a halt.
The deceased has been identified as Francisco Nunes, a resident of Jetty, Sada.
According to initial reports, Nunes was riding towards Vasco when the tree unexpectedly uprooted and fell directly onto him, crushing his scooter. He suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.
The incident created panic among commuters, with long traffic queues forming on the busy road. Fire and Emergency Services personnel, along with police and other officials, rushed to the spot and carried out an operation to cut and remove the fallen tree before restoring traffic.
The body was later shifted for medico-legal formalities.
Police have registered the case and are investigating the cause of the tree’s collapse. Authorities are examining whether heavy rains, strong winds, or the condition of the tree led to the fatal incident. Further investigation is underway.
