Amit Patkar Opposes Forced Smart Meter Installation, Warns of People’s Agitation

Goa: Former Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Patkar has strongly opposed the alleged forced installation of smart electricity meters in Goa, demanding that the state government prioritise consumer welfare, uninterrupted power supply and transparent billing.

Patkar said the BJP-led Goa government must respect the concerns of electricity consumers and allow them the choice to continue with the existing postpaid billing system. He cautioned that the latest order of the Goa Human Rights Commission should not be used to push ahead with smart meter installations without adequately addressing public concerns.

“Goans need uninterrupted power supply, not unwanted smart meters,” Patkar said, arguing that technological advancements should make life easier for ordinary citizens rather than expose them to financial uncertainty, inconvenience or harassment.

He questioned the government's decision to proceed with smart meter installations despite concerns raised by consumers. According to Patkar, technological progress must not come at the cost of consumer choice, and the government should first clarify concerns surrounding billing practices and the implementation of the project.

Patkar further emphasised that electricity is an essential service and that consumers have the right to expect reliable power supply, transparent billing and protection from unnecessary financial burdens.

He urged the government not to disregard public sentiment and called for clear answers to the concerns raised by electricity consumers. He also stressed the need for greater transparency and meaningful engagement with the public before proceeding with the installations.

Warns of People's Agitation

Issuing a warning to the government, Patkar said that continued smart meter installations against the wishes of consumers could trigger a people's agitation across Goa.

“If the government chooses to ignore the voice of the people and continues with forced installations, we will be compelled to take this fight to the streets through a people's agitation,” Patkar asserted.

He said the Congress would stand with electricity consumers in defending their rights and urged the government to reconsider its approach and ensure that public interest remains the priority.

Patkar reiterated that the government must listen to consumers, address their apprehensions and ensure that decisions concerning essential services are taken transparently, with due consideration for the concerns of households and businesses.
