PANAJI: Restoration work at the historic Shree Saptakoteshwar Temple in Divar has led to the discovery of several ancient architectural relics believed to date between the 14th and 16th centuries.
The findings were made along the old route connecting Koti Tirth and Madhavachi Talli. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the discoveries point to the possible presence of an ancient temple complex and a sacred passage at the site.
Among the notable remains are a Kirtimukh motif, a carved temple pillar capital and sections of Dev Khostam, which were traditionally associated with temple architecture and idol placement.
The different stone types and architectural elements indicate that the temple may have undergone several phases of reconstruction during the Vijayanagar period, following the destruction of an earlier structure believed to date back to the Kadamba era.
Sawant said the discovery of remains from different periods could help strengthen the historical timeline of the site and provide further insight into its long-standing religious and cultural significance.
The government, he added, remains committed to preserving and restoring Goa’s ancient heritage.
