CANACONA: Goa Forward Party (GFP) Supremo Vijai Sardesai has claimed that people in Canacona are looking for a change in leadership, alleging that voters are “fed up” with the same faces representing the constituency for several terms.
Sardesai made the statement during a day-long tour of Canacona under GFP’s ‘Zuim Ghanv Tuim Hanv’ initiative. The tour covered several parts of the constituency, including Agonda, Chaudi, Shristhal, Bhatpal, Gaondongrim, Khotigao, Loliem, Palolem, Gulem and Poinguinim.
During interactions with residents, youth, fishermen and members of the ST community, several local issues were raised, including water shortages, irrigation, unemployment, tourism-related problems and inadequate public infrastructure.
Residents of Gaondongrim and Khotigao reportedly highlighted difficulties in accessing water for domestic use and agriculture despite the areas receiving substantial rainfall. Sardesai suggested that the region’s natural attractions could be developed through eco-tourism to generate employment for local youth.
He also highlighted difficulties faced by fishermen in Palolem who have moved into tourism activities, claiming they face hurdles in obtaining permissions for boat rides and water sports.
Sardesai criticised the lack of recreational and sports facilities in Canacona, pointing out the absence of a futsal ground and walking track.
“The issue is not getting elected thrice or four times, but the inability of the elected representative to solve the people’s problems,” Sardesai said, claiming that several issues in the constituency have remained unresolved for years.
He said the party’s outreach programme was aimed at giving residents a platform to raise their concerns and claimed that the feedback received during the tour indicated a desire for political change.
Sardesai also warned against what he described as the entry of a “Delhi lobby” into Canacona, alleging that outside interests could threaten the region’s natural resources and character.
During the tour, he inspected alleged construction activity on Khazan land in Poinguinim and claimed that work was continuing despite a stop-work order. He said he would raise the matter in the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Sardesai also questioned the approval of 45 villas with swimming pools in Loliem-Polem, citing concerns over their possible impact on Canacona’s environment and ecology.
Several GFP office-bearers and Canacona party workers accompanied Sardesai during the tour.
