CANACONA: A dead dolphin calf was found washed ashore at Agonda beach on Friday afternoon, drawing the attention of locals and tourists.
The carcass was discovered behind the village church and was first spotted by people present on the beach, including Lamani hawkers who regularly visit the area for their trade.
The dolphin calf was reportedly in an advanced stage of decomposition when it was found. Dolphins are among the marine attractions that draw tourists to Goa’s coastal belt, with boat operators offering rides during the tourist season to help visitors spot them in the sea.
Following the discovery, lifesaver personnel arrived at the location in a patrol jeep. Sources said the carcass was retrieved with the assistance of beach-cleaning staff and buried in a pit dug in the upper stretch of the beach.
The cause of the calf’s death was not immediately known.
