Fresh Worm Sightings in Valpoi Raise New Fears Over Water Safety in Sattari

VALPOI: Concerns over water quality and public health in Sattari have intensified after residents reported spotting worm-like organisms on drain covers in parts of Valpoi, just days after similar organisms were found in drinking water supplied to homes in Zarme village.

The latest sightings have heightened anxiety among locals, with many calling for a thorough investigation into whether the organisms found in the water supply and those now appearing near drainage infrastructure are linked.

Residents have questioned the effectiveness of existing monitoring systems and urged authorities to identify the source of the contamination before the issue worsens.

The matter has already drawn the attention of the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC), which recently took suo motu cognisance of reports about worm-like organisms being found in the drinking water supplied to Zarme village. The Commission has sought explanations from the Public Works Department and the Health Department, directing officials to submit reports and appear before it on June 23.

With similar organisms now being reported in another public setting, residents expect the investigation to go beyond the immediate water contamination complaint and examine broader environmental and sanitation concerns.

Locals have called for scientific testing of water samples, inspections of pipelines and drainage networks, and the public release of findings to restore confidence in the safety of the water supply.

The incident has also reignited discussions on the need for stronger water quality surveillance and regular inspections of public utility infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon season when contamination risks are higher.

While authorities are yet to determine the exact nature and origin of the organisms, growing public concern has increased pressure on the concerned departments to provide answers and ensure that public health is not compromised.

With the issue now under the scrutiny of the Goa Human Rights Commission, residents are awaiting clarity on the source of the contamination and the steps being taken to prevent a recurrence.
