In a shocking revelation on the occasion of Shivjayanti, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has shed new light on Goa's history, debunking the common belief that the Portuguese ruled the entire state for 450 years. Citing Portuguese records from 1667, Sawant clarified that their rule was limited to only three talukas: Bardez, Tiswadi, and Saxti. The remaining eight talukas, Sawant revealed, were under the 'Shivshahi' rule for nearly 250 years. It was only after Shivaji Maharaj's death in 1680 that the Portuguese felt secure enough to expand their rule to the entire state.Sawant highlighted the significant influence of Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha Empire in shaping Goa's history. Contrary to popular belief, Shivaji Maharaj's attacks on the Portuguese were driven by politics and religion, rather than financial gain.In another stunning revelation, the CM disclosed that in 1667, the Portuguese had attempted to enforce a policy requiring residents of Bardez to convert to Christianity. However, Shivaji Maharaj intervened, and the Portuguese ultimately withdrew this order.
