Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai has slammed Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant over the shutdown of government schools in Goa. Sardesai accused Sawant of being responsible for closing down schools and compromising Goa’s identity. The numbers are alarming, with the state having over 1,000 government primary schools earlier, which has now dwindled to 696.¹The situation is dire, with 57% of the remaining schools having fewer than 5 students. This raises concerns about the future of education in Goa. In the academic year 2021-22, there were 726 government primary schools, which reduced to 718 in the next academic year. The state has been grappling with low enrollment in government primary schools, leading to the shutdown of 14 schools last year and eight more this year.Sardesai’s criticism highlights the need for the government to address the issues plaguing the education sector in Goa. The decline of government schools not only affects the quality of education but also compromises the state’s identity and cultural heritage.
