PANAJI: The Goa Government has reiterated its commitment to protecting the state’s traditional handloom heritage while creating better market opportunities for local weavers and artisans.
Speaking at the state-level celebration of the 12th National Handloom Day at Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant assured weavers that the government would work to provide wider market access for quality handloom products.
Sawant highlighted the growing popularity of Goa’s traditional Kunbi Saree, saying efforts are underway to give the product a distinct identity and expand its reach beyond the state.
“Produce quality products, and the Government will ensure market access,” the Chief Minister said.
He noted that the introduction of weaving machinery in villages has encouraged greater participation of women in the handloom sector. The government is also working on wider market linkages for Kunbi products, with the initiative reportedly nearing completion.
The Chief Minister said Goa’s handloom traditions are also being promoted at the national level, with Kunbi Shawls being presented to distinguished visitors, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The event featured live demonstrations of traditional handloom weaving and block printing, along with an exhibition showcasing products made at the state’s 13 Handloom Production Centres and three Handloom Training Centres. Students also presented a handloom fashion show.
Loom Allotment Certificates and Sanction Orders were distributed to eligible weavers during the programme.
Sawant also visited the exhibition stalls and interacted with women artisans from across Goa, appreciating their efforts to preserve traditional weaving practices from Pernem to Canacona.
The celebration promoted the national campaigns #MyHandloomMyPride and #MyProductMyPride, with emphasis on authentic handloom products, skill development, stronger market connections and sustainable livelihoods.
The government said the initiatives are aimed at empowering Goa’s weaving community while ensuring that the state’s rich handloom traditions continue to reach future generations.
