PANAJI: The Goa High Court has granted interim relief to two Goa-based diocesan organisations by staying the cancellation of their FCRA registrations.
The Diocesan Society of Education and Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media challenged the cancellation, arguing that they were not given a proper hearing before the action was taken.
The organisations contended that merely not receiving foreign contributions did not mean they had become inactive. The Court observed that an organisation can continue its activities using its own funds and that non-receipt of foreign contributions, by itself, does not establish that it has ceased functioning.
The Court also noted the petitioners’ claim that they were not formally served certified copies of the cancellation orders.
Finding a prima facie case, the Court granted ad-interim relief and kept the cancellation orders in abeyance. The matter will be heard further on September 10.
