PANAJI: Preparations for elections to Goa’s 11 municipal councils have entered another stage, with the State Election Commission (SEC) currently reviewing suggestions and objections received on the proposed ward boundaries.
State Election Commissioner Menino D’Souza said the Commission is examining the public feedback and will publish the final ward delimitation notification within the deadline fixed by the Bombay High Court at Goa.
The next step will be reservation of wards. The draft reservation list is expected to be published on September 20, after which the public will have a month to file objections or suggestions. The final reservation notification is scheduled for November 9.
The election process is expected to enter its final phase in December, when the model code of conduct could remain in force for around 25 days. Polling, counting and declaration of results must be completed by January 4, 2027.
The schedule follows the High Court’s decision upholding the Goa Municipalities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, while directing the SEC to complete elections for all 11 municipal councils within the January 4 deadline.
The terms of the 11 municipal councils ended between March and May this year. Administrators were subsequently appointed by the state government to oversee the councils until new elected bodies take charge.
The SEC has said it will follow the court-approved timeline and complete the municipal election process within the stipulated deadline.
