PANAJI: Goa’s former NEET topper, Lt Abhida Barretto, has been commissioned as a Medical Officer in the Indian Army after successfully completing her MBBS from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.
Hailing from Muthal-Sadolxem in Canacona, Barretto had secured the highest NEET rank in Goa, earning admission opportunities at premier institutions such as AIIMS and JIPMER. Instead, she chose AFMC to fulfil her dream of serving the nation as a doctor in the armed forces.
Despite having no military background, Barretto developed a strong interest in joining the armed forces during her school days. Inspired by her teachers, she decided to pursue a career that combined medicine with national service.
At AFMC, she distinguished herself through exceptional academic performance, graduating among the top students of her batch. She was awarded several honours, including the prestigious Maj Gen N.D.P. Karani Trophy, and received multiple gold medals in recognition of her excellence in medical subjects.
Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army Medical Corps, Barretto will now complete her internship before assuming her duties as a Medical Officer.
Her achievement is being celebrated as a proud milestone for Goa, reflecting dedication, academic excellence, and a strong commitment to serving the country.
