PANAJI: Goa recorded 1,005 motor vehicle accidents between January 1 and September 30, 2026, up from 915 during the same period in 2025 — an increase of 9.8%.

While the number of accidents increased, fatalities declined. The state recorded 91 deaths in 2026, compared with 96 in 2025, marking a 5.2% reduction. The number of fatal accidents remained unchanged at 92 in both periods.

However, grievous injuries rose sharply, from 130 cases in 2025 to 173 in 2026 — an increase of 33.07%.

Ponda Reports Highest Number of Accidents

TC Ponda recorded the highest number of accidents at 159, followed by TC Margao with 100, MCPS with 96, Cuncolim with 96 and MTPS with 89.

Self-fatal accidents also declined, with 28 fatalities recorded in 2026, compared with 36 in the corresponding period last year. Their share of total fatalities fell from 39.1% to 30.1%.

Traffic Enforcement Steps Up

Traffic enforcement also intensified in September, with increases reported in cases involving drunk driving, riding without helmets, modified silencers and insurance violations, among other offences.

At the same time, cases related to no-entry violations, no-parking, obstructive and unauthorised parking, mobile phone use while driving and improper number plates declined compared with September 2025.

The data presents a mixed road-safety picture: more accidents and significantly more grievous injuries, but fewer fatalities during the first nine months of 2026.
