PANAJI: Goa is witnessing a rise in seasonal viral infections, with cases of H1N1 influenza and Covid-19 being reported in the state. The Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has urged residents to remain cautious while avoiding unnecessary panic.
According to health department data, influenza detections have increased sharply, from six cases in June to more than 73 cases recorded so far in August.
Health officials have advised people not to take antibiotics without medical consultation, as antibiotics do not work against viral infections. Doctors have also cautioned against self-medication and recommended seeking medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen.
Residents have been advised to wash their hands regularly, cover their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, wear masks when necessary and avoid crowded places when feeling unwell.
Physician Dr Sandip Naik of Mapusa said H1N1 appears to be the predominant infection currently circulating in Goa, along with other seasonal viruses. He advised people with fever to stay home, take adequate rest and consult a doctor if symptoms continue.
Doctors said fever and sore throat alone do not necessarily mean antibiotics are required. In mild cases, rest, adequate fluids and medicines for symptom relief may be sufficient.
Health professionals have linked the increased spread of viral infections partly to the humid monsoon conditions.
Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has clarified that there is no evidence of a new H1N1 strain emerging in India.
The DHS has appealed to residents to follow basic hygiene practices, avoid unnecessary medication and seek timely medical care when required.
