PANAJI: Goa University and the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Goa, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Matsya Sandhana Kshetram programme to promote scientific research, innovation and sustainable development in Goa’s fisheries sector.
The MoU was signed at Goa University on August 10, with the partnership focusing on research, skill development, technology-based initiatives and creating better opportunities for the state’s fishing community.
Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said fisheries remain an important part of Goa’s social, cultural and economic fabric, supporting livelihoods and contributing to food security.
Sawant said the collaboration would strengthen research, innovation and skill development in the sector. He also stressed the need for increased training opportunities for local youth and fishermen while preserving Goa’s traditional fishing practices and cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister said a stronger fisheries sector would also contribute to the government’s vision of a Swayampurna Goa.
A major highlight of the programme was the launch of the Matsya Sandhana Kshetram app, a Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) Guidance Application developed using satellite observations, oceanographic data and advanced analysis.
The application is designed to help fishermen locate potential fishing zones, reducing the time spent searching for fishing grounds and helping lower fuel and operational costs. It is also expected to improve fishing efficiency and support safer operations at sea.
The initiative aims to strengthen Goa’s Blue Economy by connecting scientific research with practical solutions for fishermen while encouraging responsible use of marine resources.
Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar, Goa University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Harilal B. Menon, Registrar Sundhar N. Dhuri, Goa State Research Foundation Chairman Prof. Janardana, Fisheries Director Dr. Samila Monteiro, Dean of the School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Prof. Anthony A. Viegas, senior government officials, university representatives and members of the fisheries sector attended the programme.
