Guard to Face Suspension, Termination Over Colvale Jail Ganja Case: CM Sawant

PANAJI: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has ordered strict action against a GHRDC security guard allegedly caught carrying suspected narcotic substances into Colvale Central Jail, saying the person involved will be suspended and terminated.

Reacting to the incident, Sawant said security and vigilance at the central jail were being maintained strictly and warned that any breach of prison security would invite stringent action.

“The person found with ganja will be suspended and terminated,” Sawant said.

The statement came after Asha Chodankar, a GHRDC security guard, was allegedly intercepted by IRB personnel at the jail’s frisking point on Tuesday morning.

According to information available, a search of a steel bottle allegedly in her possession led to the recovery of around 236 grams of a substance suspected to be ganja and approximately 2 grams of suspected charas.

A subsequent search of her locker reportedly resulted in the seizure of three ATM cards, three mobile phones and other articles.

Jail authorities later handed over Chodankar and the seized material to Colvale Police, who conducted a panchanama and registered a case under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act and Prison Act.

Investigators are now probing how the suspected narcotic substances allegedly entered the high-security prison and whether others were involved in the incident.

The case has also raised questions over security protocols at Colvale Central Jail and the effectiveness of checks conducted on personnel entering the premises.
