Panaji, August 28, 2026:Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar launched a scathing attack on the BJP Government over the reported firing incident near the Porvorim Police Station, saying the incident is a frightening reflection of the complete breakdown of law and order in Goa.
“If criminals have the audacity to allegedly open fire just metres away from a police station, then who is actually in control in Goa — the Police or the criminals?” Chodankar asked.
He said the incident has exposed the hollow claims of the BJP Government about maintaining law and order.
“A police station is supposed to be a symbol of fear for criminals and security for citizens. But if gunfire can reportedly take place at its doorstep, the BJP Government must explain what has happened to the authority of the police in Goa,” Chodankar said.
He questioned whether the common Goan can still expect protection from the Government when incidents involving guns and criminal intimidation are increasingly becoming a matter of public concern.
“The most disturbing aspect is that even people perceived to be close to the BJP establishment are reportedly not safe. If the powerful themselves are vulnerable, what chance does an ordinary Goan have? Has Goa now reached a stage where political connections cannot even guarantee personal safety?” he asked.
Chodankar demanded that the Government and police authorities immediately identify the perpetrators, establish the motive behind the firing and ensure that no political influence is allowed to derail the investigation.
He said the BJP Government cannot continue to hide behind statements and photo opportunities while citizens live under fear.
“Goa is being turned into a State where criminals appear increasingly emboldened while law-abiding citizens are made to feel helpless. This is not ‘Good Governance’. This is a dangerous governance failure,” Chodankar said.
He further accused the Government of becoming more concerned about protecting its political image than protecting the people of Goa.
“The BJP Government must understand that law and order is not a publicity exercise. It is the fundamental responsibility of any Government. Every gunshot near a police station sends a chilling message: the fear of the law is disappearing. The Government must restore that fear among criminals before Goa pays an even heavier price,” Chodankar warned.
“Goans do not want a gun culture. They do not want criminal intimidation. They do not want to live in fear. Goa deserves safety, security and dignity — not gunfire at the doorstep of a police station.”
