Illegal Borewells to Face Crackdown From August; WRD to Introduce Summer Water Storage Plan

PANAJI: Goa Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Subhash Shirodkar has announced that strict action against illegal borewells across the state will begin from August, stressing the need to protect Goa’s groundwater resources.

Speaking to the media, Shirodkar said the government is determined to curb unauthorized borewell drilling and ensure sustainable management of water resources.

The minister also revealed that the WRD is working on a new scheme to store sufficient water in dams during May to avoid shortages during the peak summer season. The initiative aims to maintain adequate reserves for at least two months and improve long-term water security in the state.

He assured that Goa is currently not facing any water crisis, as recent monsoon rains have substantially increased water levels in the state’s reservoirs.

Shirodkar added that the department will continue to monitor dam levels closely and implement measures to promote responsible groundwater use and strengthen water conservation efforts across Goa.
