Karnataka Minister Makes Fresh Appeal To Goa For Dialogue On Mhadei Dispute

PANAJI: Karnataka Agriculture Minister N Chaluvaraya Swamy has called for dialogue between Goa and Karnataka to find an amicable solution to the long-running Mhadei water dispute.

Speaking in Goa, Swamy said Karnataka’s demand was primarily linked to drinking water needs and replenishing tanks. He urged Goa to consider Karnataka’s requirements and said the two neighbouring states should explore a negotiated settlement instead of allowing the dispute to remain locked in prolonged legal proceedings.

Highlighting the close social ties between Goa and Karnataka, Swamy pointed out that many people from Karnataka live and work in Goa, while Goans have also settled in Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru. He said these connections could help create greater understanding between the two states.

The minister said both sides should approach the issue as states within the same country and make efforts to resolve their differences through discussion, even while the matter remains before the courts.

Swamy also highlighted Karnataka’s position as a downstream state, saying the state requires Mhadei waters for drinking purposes and tank-filling. Referring to water flowing into the sea during periods of heavy flooding, he appealed for consideration of measures to conserve and utilise such water.

However, Goa has consistently opposed proposed diversion of Mhadei waters towards Karnataka’s Malaprabha basin, citing the river’s ecological significance and Goa’s own water requirements.

With the dispute continuing through legal and regulatory channels, Swamy’s latest remarks have once again brought the possibility of dialogue and a negotiated settlement into focus.
