BENAULIM: Former Goa Tourism Minister Micky Pacheco has joined the revived United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections and announced plans to contest from Nuvem on the party’s ticket.
Pacheco has also joined the party’s executive committee, which includes 11 other advocates. The UGDP is awaiting approval for its proposed two-leaves election symbol, popularly known as “Don Panam.”
Announcing the party’s electoral plans, Pacheco said the UGDP intends to field candidates across Goa. He argued that the party would not divide votes, claiming that aspirants denied Congress tickets could contest independently and split the secular vote.
Pacheco also indicated that his wife may contest the upcoming elections, stating that the decision was intended to avoid dynasty politics.
He further criticised Amit Palekar over his participation in the Goem Rakhon Yatra, questioning his involvement in the campaign in light of alleged links to land deals.
Radharao Gracias Welcomes UGDP Revival
Advocate Radharao Gracias said he had no objection to reviving the UGDP and was willing to provide a no-objection certificate along with advocate Anacleto Viegas.
Gracias explained that the party had effectively become inactive after failing to conduct executive committee elections. He said former members had approached them seeking support for its revival ahead of the 2027 polls.
However, he cautioned Congress against selling its Nuvem ticket, urging the party to nominate a deserving candidate committed to its principles. He also warned against selecting candidates who might defect after winning elections.
The UGDP’s revival and Pacheco’s planned return to electoral politics could reshape the political contest in Nuvem and add another player to Goa’s run-up to the 2027 Assembly elections.
