PANAJI: The North Goa district administration will conduct monthly review meetings to speed up compensation claims for victims of unidentified hit-and-run accidents, Collector Ankit Yadav said.
The decision follows the processing of North Goa’s first two cases under the Central government’s compensation scheme for hit-and-run victims. Compensation cheques were handed over on Thursday to the family of a person who died in a hit-and-run accident and to another victim who sustained injuries.
Three more claims are currently under process and will be expedited, the administration said.
Yadav said the monthly reviews are aimed at ensuring that eligible claims do not remain pending at the district administration level.
Under the scheme, families of victims who die in unidentified hit-and-run accidents are eligible for ₹2 lakh, while victims suffering grievous injuries can receive ₹50,000.
The process begins with a proposal from the Deputy Collector’s office, supported by accident-related documents. After verification and processing by the district administration, the claim is forwarded to the insurance agency for approval.
Police and medical reports, along with other necessary documents, are required to establish the circumstances of the accident and verify the claim.
Officials said the process involves coordination between the district administration, police, Transport Department and insurance agency.
The administration also plans to use the first successful cases to create awareness about the scheme so that more affected families know about the financial assistance available to victims of unidentified hit-and-run accidents.
With monthly monitoring in place, the district administration aims to reduce delays and ensure that eligible victims and their families receive compensation in a timely manner.
