Panjim Park Zoning Change Faces Strong Citizen Opposition

PANAJI: A group of Panaji residents, civic representatives and experts has opposed the proposed change in the zoning of Panjim Park, popularly known as the old Quarterdeck, from recreational use to Special Commercial Zone (SPZ).

Panaji Councillor Jack Sukhija, author Chryselle Dias, historian Prajal Sakhardande and local residents have submitted representations to the NGPDA and Town and Country Planning Department, demanding that the property retain its original recreational zoning.

The group warned that allowing commercial zoning could restrict public access to the 5,845-square-metre riverfront space and create a precedent for converting other public parks and open spaces for commercial use.

Citizens said Panjim Park has served as a public recreational space since the 1980s and stressed that Panaji’s riverfront and open spaces are an important part of the city’s heritage and identity.

The group has urged authorities not to finalise the proposed SPZ classification under the Draft ODP 2031 and instead retain the area for public recreation and continued access
