President Droupadi Murmu Confers Padma Shri on Smt. Libia Lobo Prataprao Sardesai for Social Work.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious Padma Shri Award in the field of Social Work to Smt. Libia Lobo Prataprao Sardesai, honoring her lifelong commitment to freedom, justice, and community service.

A legendary figure in Goa’s history, Smt. Sardesai is celebrated as the region’s first woman advocate, a freedom fighter, and a dedicated activist for women's and consumer rights. Her fearless stand against the Portuguese colonial rule and her role in empowering the voices of the oppressed have left a lasting legacy.

During Goa’s liberation struggle, she co-founded the underground radio station "Voice of Freedom", a powerful tool in rallying support against the colonial regime. On December 19, 1961, she made history by announcing Goa’s liberation to the world through the airwaves, proclaiming that the people of Goa were free.

Beyond the independence movement, her work in legal advocacy, women’s empowerment, and consumer awareness has continued to inspire generations. Her recognition with the Padma Shri reaffirms the nation’s gratitude for her unwavering dedication to public service and human dignity.
