Sancoale, Goa | September 4, 2026: A fatal road accident at Shindolim in Sancoale on Friday afternoon claimed the life of a 37-year-old motorcyclist after a Mercedes allegedly collided with his motorcycle. Both vehicles subsequently caught fire and were completely gutted.
The deceased has been identified as Ashok Chavan, 37, a resident of Shindolim, Sancoale. He was riding motorcycle GA06 Q 7275 when it was allegedly hit by a Mercedes bearing registration number GA07 L 9095.
According to preliminary information, the impact was severe and the motorcycle was reportedly dragged by the Mercedes for nearly two kilometres before the vehicles came to a halt. The vehicles then caught fire, prompting an emergency response.
Firefighters reached the spot and brought the blaze under control. The Mercedes driver was also rescued from the vehicle.
Verna Police subsequently reached the accident site and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Sources have alleged that the Mercedes driver, identified as Vidhyadhar Prabhu, 32, from Fatorda, may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. However, this remains an allegation and will have to be established through the police investigation and medical examination.
The incident caused panic among residents in the area. Locals also expressed concern over road safety, particularly given the presence of schoolchildren and pedestrians who frequently use the road.
Congress leader Olencio Simoes condemned the incident and called for strict action against the driver. He also urged the police to consider appropriate criminal charges if the investigation establishes reckless or deliberate driving under the influence of alcohol.
