Sewage Treatment Plants Mandatory for Large Housing Complexes in Goa

PANAJI:GSPCB has directed Large Housing Complexes to Install Sewage Treatment PlantsThe Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has mandated that all residential housing projects comprising more than 24 flats must install Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to curb the discharge of untreated sewage into open areas. The directive aims to tackle health risks associated with improper wastewater disposal.Complexes already linked to public sewerage systems are exempt from this requirement. For new projects, builders must include a condition in their Consent to Establish or Operate applications stating that the STP will be maintained for at least three years or until it is formally handed over to the housing society or residents’ association. This measure ensures that the facilities remain functional and that the managing society is properly equipped to operate them. The decision follows a High Court order issued on September 11, which underscored the importance of effective sewage treatment in large residential complexes. The GSPCB has urged the state government to enforce this rule for all housing complexes exceeding the 24-flat threshold.
