Shirodkar Reviews Amthane Pumping Station, Sal Barrage Projects to Strengthen North Goa Water Supply

Goa, September 8, 2026: Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar, along with engineering officials of the Water Resources Department, inspected the ongoing water infrastructure projects at Amthane Dam and Sal Village on Tuesday, reviewing their progress and operational readiness.

At Amthane Dam, Minister Shirodkar inspected the newly established pumping station and reviewed its pumping operations. The facility is being developed to supply 150 MLD (Million Litres per Day) of water for treatment at Assonora and to meet the water requirements of Porvorim and Pillern.

The pumping station is aimed at strengthening North Goa's water supply network and ensuring a more reliable and uninterrupted supply to consumers. According to the Water Resources Department, the project is scheduled to become functional from October 1, 2026.

Shirodkar subsequently visited the Sal Barrage and Pumping Station at Sal Village to assess the progress of the newly constructed infrastructure.

The new Sal Pumping Station will have the capacity to discharge 250 MLD of water per day, adding significant capacity to the region's water supply system.

The Sal Barrage is currently nearing completion and is expected to have a storage capacity of approximately 50 lakh cubic metres of water once completed. The barrage is expected to strengthen water security and help meet increased demand, particularly during periods of water stress.

During the inspections, Minister Shirodkar stressed the need to complete the projects within the stipulated timelines and ensure that the infrastructure is made fully operational for the benefit of the people of Goa.

The projects are expected to play a key role in improving the state's water storage, pumping and distribution capacity, particularly in North Goa, while strengthening long-term water security.
