AITUC Accuses Goa Govt of Anti-Labour Stance

Panjim:All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) leader Christopher Fonseca has strongly criticized Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, accusing him of being anti-labour even during his tenure as an MLA.Fonseca alleged that the Chief Minister’s policies have consistently harmed workers’ interests, citing the imposition of the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) in the pharmaceutical industry. “For three consecutive years, ESMA has been enforced, suppressing workers’ rights and stifling democratic protest,” he said. The AITUC also raised concerns about the transfer of a majority of workers from Goa-based pharmaceutical units to far-off regions like Jammu and Ladakh. “This is a clear attempt to break the backbone of labour unity in the state,” Fonseca added. The union has called for immediate withdrawal of ESMA and protection of workers’ rights in Goa.AITUC Goa will celebrate May Day 2025 in Panaji, standing in solidarity with workers worldwide for fair wages, safe workplaces, and social justice. The event will feature a rally starting at 9:30 AM on May 1, beginning at the KTCL Bus Stand and proceeding towards Panjim Church. The rally aims to raise awareness about workers' rights, including demands for better wages, improved working conditions, and enhanced social security. AITUC Goa has called on workers from all sectors to join the rally, advocating for collective action to secure these fundamental rights.
