CANACONA: Shree Mallikarjun & Shri Chetan Manju Desai College, Canacona, celebrated the traditional practice of ‘Sweet August’ as part of an initiative to reconnect students with Goa’s rich cultural heritage and customs followed by earlier generations.
The programme highlighted the age-old practice of preparing sweet dishes at home and beginning the month of August with coconut and jaggery. The initiative aimed to create awareness among students about traditional Goan practices that are gradually fading from everyday life.
Local homemaker Mrs Ida Monteiro, who attended the programme as chief guest, interacted with the students and spoke about the significance of ‘Sweet August’ and the traditional practice of ‘Purumenta’. Her interaction gave students an opportunity to learn about the customs, food practices and way of life associated with old Goa.
Vice Principal Dr Rupa Chari welcomed the gathering, while Head of the Department of History Ms Domitel D’Souza spoke about the importance of preserving traditional practices and ensuring that such cultural knowledge reaches younger generations.
The programme concluded with the distribution of coconut and jaggery among students and faculty members, adding a traditional touch to the campus celebration.
