MARGAO: The Congress has sought clarity from the Goa Forward Party (GFP) over its association with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) under the ‘Goa First’ platform, raising questions about the regional party’s approach to Opposition unity ahead of the next Assembly elections.
The development follows fresh criticism of the Congress by AAP over MLAs who switched allegiance to the BJP. Congress leaders have questioned whether the GFP agrees with the remarks made by its political partner.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee chief Girish Chodankar had earlier objected to ‘Goa First’ banners accusing the Congress of betraying voters. Congress working president Sunil Kawthankar has now asked the GFP to clarify its stand on AAP’s latest comments, including the ‘ek kachori, do samosa’ jibe directed at the Congress.
The Congress has pointed to a contradiction in GFP chief Vijai Sardesai’s position. While Sardesai has advocated a broader Opposition front that includes the Congress, the ‘Goa First’ campaign continues to criticise the party.
Kawthankar has urged the GFP leadership to explain whether it intends to pursue a wider Opposition grouping or continue its electoral understanding with AAP.
The clarification assumes importance as Opposition parties weigh their options ahead of the Assembly elections. The GFP’s position could play a significant role in determining whether a broader front against the BJP can take shape in Goa.
