Degrees Not Enough: Goa CM Links Graduate Joblessness To Gaps In Teaching Approach

KHANDOLA: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has drawn a direct connection between rising unemployment among highly qualified youth and shortcomings in the current teaching approach, stating that degrees alone are no guarantee of employability.Taking a sharper stance, Sawant said the presence of double graduates without jobs reflects a deeper systemic issue, where students are not being adequately prepared for real-world careers. He asserted that educators must share responsibility for this gap and shift their focus from purely academic outcomes to career readiness.The Chief Minister called on teachers to adopt a more practical and forward-looking role by encouraging entrepreneurship and self-employment, while also guiding students through structured counselling even after they complete their studies. He stressed that continuous mentorship is key to helping graduates transition into the workforce.Highlighting the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence, Sawant noted that while some roles may disappear, the relevance of teachers will only grow in helping students adapt, reskill and make informed career choices.He also proposed that institutions track and document the employment status of their graduates, arguing that such accountability would provide a clearer measure of educational effectiveness and ensure that teaching aligns with evolving job market demands.
