PANAJI: The Goa government has initiated a high-level inquiry into the massive fire that engulfed parts of Vasco on October 28, causing extensive property damage. The inquiry committee has been directed to submit its findings within seven days.
As per an order issued by the Home Department on October 30, Secretary (Revenue) has been appointed to lead the fact-finding inquiry and examine the circumstances that led to the incident.
The probe will assess the preparedness of emergency agencies, availability of firefighting equipment, response time of authorities and coordination between various departments involved in the firefighting operation.
The inquiry will also establish the timeline of events and identify possible lapses, negligence or shortcomings that may have contributed to the scale of destruction. Accountability of officials concerned will also be examined wherever necessary.
The investigating officer has been authorised to collect relevant documents, seek explanations and record statements from concerned departments and officials.
The government has also directed the inquiry officer to suggest corrective measures to improve firefighting preparedness and strengthen emergency response systems across the state.
The final report, along with recommendations, must be submitted to the government within seven days.
