VASCO: Strong monsoon winds uprooted several trees near St. Andrew’s Church in Vasco on Tuesday, causing temporary traffic disruption and inconvenience to commuters. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
The trees collapsed onto the roadway after powerful gusts swept through the area, obstructing vehicular movement. Local authorities responded swiftly, with Vasco MLA Krishna “Daji” Salkar reaching the spot along with his office staff, Mormugao Municipal Council workers, and Fire and Emergency Services personnel.
Using machinery and coordinated manpower, teams removed the fallen trees and restored traffic flow within a short period.
Speaking at the site, Salkar said that civic authorities have been proactively trimming trees across the city and removing those identified as dangerous. However, he noted that some ageing trees appear healthy from the outside and cannot be felled without clearance from the Forest Department. He explained that the uprooted trees near the church were old and were dislodged by the force of strong winds.
Salkar also highlighted the role of the recently completed Vasco railway underbridge, stating that it enabled emergency teams to reach the location quickly. According to him, before the underbridge was built, emergency vehicles often faced delays in accessing various parts of the city.
The prompt action of municipal workers and emergency responders ensured the road was cleared efficiently, preventing any major disruption and restoring normal traffic movement at the earliest.
