*NSUI-Goa Demands Supplementary Examinations for Final-Year Students; Goa University Assures Proposal Will Be Considered*

Panaji: In a major initiative to protect the academic future of students, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI)-Goa submitted a detailed memorandum to the Registrar of Goa University demanding the introduction of Supplementary Examinations for Final-Year Undergraduate and Postgraduate students with backlog papers through a special amendment to the existing University Ordinance.

The NSUI-Goa delegation pointed out that while first and second-year students are provided the benefit of Allowed to Keep Terms (ATKT) and supplementary examinations, no such provision exists for students in the final year of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. As a result, students who fail to clear even a single paper are compelled to wait for an entire academic year before reappearing for the examination, delaying the completion of their degree and jeopardising their future.

The memorandum highlighted that the present system has serious academic, financial and psychological consequences. It results in the loss of an academic year, delays in obtaining degree certificates, missed employment opportunities, inability to secure admissions for higher education in the same academic cycle, additional financial burden on families, and increased stress and uncertainty regarding students’ academic and professional careers.

NSUI-Goa urged the University to introduce a supplementary examination for final-year students through a special amendment to the existing Ordinance, amend the relevant examination regulations, conduct the supplementary examinations within a reasonable period after the declaration of final semester results, and issue provisional as well as degree certificates immediately after successful completion of the supplementary examination so that students can pursue higher education and employment without losing a year.

The organisation stated that introducing such a provision would significantly reduce academic wastage, promote equitable access to education, and ensure that deserving students are not deprived of opportunities merely because there is no mechanism to clear a backlog immediately after the regular examination.

During the meeting, the Registrar of Goa University informed the NSUI-Goa delegation that the University is already examining the issue and that the proposal will be placed before the next meeting of the competent University authority to work towards a suitable solution.

Welcoming the positive assurance, NSUI-Goa expressed confidence that the University will take a favourable decision in the interest of thousands of students studying in affiliated colleges across Goa. The organisation said that the introduction of supplementary examinations for final-year students would be a progressive and student-friendly reform that upholds the principles of academic justice, inclusiveness and efficient educational administration.

NSUI-Goa reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of students and stated that it will continue to pursue this long-pending issue until a permanent solution is implemented in the larger interest of Goa’s student community.
