PANAJI: The proposed Heritage Interpretation Centre at Old Goa has been put on hold after archaeological remains were discovered during excavation at the site.
Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the findings need detailed examination to establish their historical significance before any construction can proceed.
He said relocating the project remains an option, but the final decision will be taken by the Goa government after assessing the archaeological findings.
The project has faced opposition from sections of the local community and political leaders over concerns about its impact on Old Goa’s historic character and skyline.
Shekhawat also said Goa could be considered among 50 major tourist destinations proposed by the Centre for development with international-standard facilities. He highlighted additional tourism projects approved for the state under the PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan schemes.
