Road Accidents on the Rise in Goa; Injury Cases See Sharp Increase in 2026

PANAJI: Goa has recorded a noticeable increase in road accidents during the first six months of 2026, with the number of crashes rising above the figures registered during the corresponding period last year. While the death toll has remained almost unchanged, authorities have reported a significant increase in both serious and minor accidents.

According to official data available till June, a total of 1,255 road accidents have been reported across the State this year, compared to 1,151 during the same period in 2025, marking an increase of 104 cases.

Despite the rise in overall accidents, fatal crashes have registered a marginal decline. A total of 126 fatal accidents have been recorded so far in 2026, against 130 during the corresponding period last year. However, the number of lives lost remains nearly identical, with 132 deaths reported this year compared to 133 in 2025.

Accidents causing injuries have shown a marked increase. Serious accidents rose from 106 cases last year to 126 this year, while the number of grievously injured persons climbed from 127 to 158. Minor accidents also increased from 237 to 280 cases, with injuries in these incidents rising from 366 to 434.

Non-injury accidents witnessed an upward trend as well, increasing from 678 cases in 2025 to 723 this year, indicating a broader rise in road-related incidents across the State.

June data reflects a similar pattern. As of the latest reporting date, 160 accidents had been recorded during the month, compared to 135 during the corresponding period last year. Fatal accidents increased from 14 to 15, while the number of deaths rose from 14 to 17.

Serious accidents during June went up from 17 to 21, while minor accidents increased from 32 to 42. The number of persons injured in both categories also showed a rise.

Earlier statistics for the January-May period had already indicated an upward trend, with 1,094 accidents and 112 fatalities reported across Goa. Although fatalities were lower than in the previous year, the overall number of accidents continued to rise.

Traffic authorities have attributed most accidents to rash and negligent driving. Two-wheeler riders continue to account for a large share of fatalities, while national highways remain among the most accident-prone stretches. A majority of accidents are reported on straight roads rather than at junctions or curves.
